The Internet is Magic, Vol I

August 23, 2019

The internet is magic and I love it so much. This series is all about highlighting the writing on the internet that inspired me in a positive way so that we can remember that the internet can be a magical, wonderful place when it uses its power for good. I loved reading about Anita Vuong on We are Dore this morning. Vuong is a Death Doula, supporting people through the death process with grace, dignity and love. It’s a beautiful thing. I also love her work with ‘Guided by Flowers‘ where she repurposes flowers used for live events to brighten the lives of hospice patients. My favorite line:

“One man I gave flowers to couldn’t believe that they were for him. He opened up about how he really loved gardening, and though they weren’t tulips, he kept calling them tulips and said how much they reminded him of home. From then on, I make sure I always give flowers to men as well.”

This essay from Donald Hall via Cup of Jo this week was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. Yes, I love hyperbole, but it was beautiful. I read it from my work desk during in a lull in my workday and I had to take big gulps of my water to keep myself from crying.

“After twenty years of our remarkable marriage, living and writing together in double solitude, Jane died of leukemia at forty-seven, on April 22, 1995.

Now it is April 22, 2016, and Jane has been dead for more than two decades. Earlier this year, at eighty-seven, I grieved for her in a way I had never grieved before. I was sick and thought I was dying. Every day of her dying, I stayed by her side—a year and a half. It was miserable that Jane should die so young, and it was redemptive that I could be with her every hour of every day. Last January I grieved again, this time that she would not sit beside me as I died.”

And, to wrap up, a feel-good makeover for a very deserving couple going through a difficult time on Emily Henderson Design. This is a great example of using the privilege of a platform for good. I just want to sleep all day in the big ol’ bed.
