Dispatches from Reno

January 20, 2019

IMG-0011

What was supposed to be a quick couple of nights in Reno has turned into a long weekend due to the weather. We are trying to make the best of it by indulging in lots of beers, gambling, nachos and football. While I normally love a weekend away, I’m a little tense this weekend because I’m away from my Jax and he has a little ear infection. I love him so much that I want to be the one to care for him. When I feel a little low while away from home, I almost always scroll way back into my camera roll and watch videos and look at pictures of him and Boomer when he was a puppy. HOW CUTE IS HE????

Also, here’s a little list of the highlights from Reno:

  • A white-knuckle drive through the mountains late on Friday night. Can I just say how happy I am that Keith was driving?
  • The exhilaration of winning on a really fun game.
  • Room service of salad + strawberries when recovering from day-drinking
  • Sleeping in + taking a nap
  • All you can eat sushi. Even if we paid for it later, it was still good in the moment.
  • The unexpected joy of realizing you have to stay another night.
  • Also realizing that you will be away from your dog for another night at the same moment.

Okay guys, I know this wasn’t my best post. I’m really trying to keep this streak alive. Signing off for now! Hope you’re having a great MLK Jr. weekend.

The Atacama Desert

January 8, 2019

I can’t say that I ever had a particular desire to visit the Atacama Desert. It’s not on my bucket list or anything, but in reviewing the recaps popping up on Atelier Dore of their recent retreat in the Atacama, I have to say I’m intrigued. In the retreat before this one, they visited Marrakech and that looked awesome, too.

Maybe I just want to go on a retreat with Garance? Anyone want to Venmo me about $4k so I can sign up?

Could you travel to 52 places in a year?

January 6, 2019

nytimes 52 travel destinations

I’m currently fighting with the New York Times. Well, to be a little less dramatic about it, I’m going back and forth with a NYT customer service representative because when I signed up for my digital subscription over a year ago, I was promised a free Google Home and they never gave it to me. I’m considering cancelling my subscription over it because it just makes me irate that they would advertise something and then not follow through with it. I’m incredulous that the New York Times, who kind of hinges their whole brand image on doing the right thing, would engage in false advertising. Can you believe it?

I want to cancel, but then again I believe in good journalism and the NYT has always been great in that regard.

You already know that I read the Modern Love column with dedication. I am also delighted by Roxane Gay’s articles, especially her Ask Roxane series. Gah, it’s just so good and I am a total fangirl.

As of today, I have another reason not to cancel: I have to read about 52 articles because I am absolutely smitten by this new-to-me series where a NYT reporter visits the full list of the 52 best destinations in 2018. Her wrap-up article was superb and I couldn’t agree more with her major takeaway from her travels: “That people are fundamentally good around the world.”

Yes, they are.

Now I’m sitting here and seriously debating whether or not I’d want to try to visit 52 places in a year if given such an extraordinary opportunity. Would you? It seems like it would be so exhausting. I’m sure that I’d do it if I had a chance, but I’d seriously miss my dogs and my family. On second thought, maybe I wouldn’t. I love travel, but I think I love my life more.

Where do you stand? Would you peace out or stay put?
