Let’s play a fun game and list our Top 5 favorite desserts in rank order. Feel free to be as specific as possible.
- Creme brulee. The custard cousin of Pot de Creme. I came into writing this list decided that Pot de Creme was my number one, but in the exact moment I was about to hit publish, I remembered my beloved Creme Brulee and I had to bump Pot de Creme. Look, they’re both delicious but the sugar crust on a Creme Brulee just gets me. Like, how is it possible for something on this earth to be so perfect? My mom makes the best creme brulee on planet earth. Sometimes when I come home for a visit, she has a batch already made up in the fridge just waiting for us to brew a pot of decaf after dinner and bust out the blowtorch. Bless that woman and her culinary prowess.
- A silky smooth and luscious Chocolate Pot de Creme with freshly whipped cream on top. I had a delicious one at Angeline’s in Berkeley this weekend that prompted the writing of this post. I love it when a pot de creme is decadent but super light at the same time.
- My mom’s Pecan Pie. Hands down, my all-time favorite pie. She makes it with light caro syrup and homemade shortening pie crust and it is out-of-this-world good. Have you ever put whipped cream on your pecan pie? It takes it to the next level.
- Lemon Bars. Oh gosh, lemon bars are SO good. Anytime I am offered a lemon bar, I will eat it. It could be from a box, store bought, homemade, you name it. I am a sucker for a lemon bar. A good lemon bar? I’m DONE.
- Pound cake and strawberries. I love to macerate height-of-perfection Summer strawberries overnight and then pour them over pound cake with, you guessed it, fresh whipped cream. I’m sensing a trend here with the whipped cream. I don’t mind if the cake is store bought, but it has to be a pound cake. I never could get behind shortcakes or angel food cake. Pound cake for life!
