The Internet is Magic, Vol VII

I’m trying a new thing this week where I share my Internet is Magic links on Monday instead of Friday. I realized this weekend that I do the majority of my internet reading on the weekends, so posting here on Mondays makes more sense for me. Plus, I really like to get all of the blog content scheduled for the week on Sunday. Leaving Internet is Magic until Friday leaves my blog posting to the mercy of my work week and that’s never a good idea.

I learned this week about Future Self Journaling from the Holistic Psychologist and I’m thinking of giving it a try. Lord knows I have lots of behaviors I want to improve about myself. Is anyone interested in doing a one month challenge with me?

I’d like to be a more informed voter in the upcoming elections, but I feel unsure about how to go about educating myself on where the candidates stand on important issues. I really liked this quiz on the Washington Post to figure out which Democrat agrees with you most. It feels like I’m taking a step in the right direction.

A few years ago, my New Years resolution was to do Sunday Supper with my sister and her family every single week. I am so grateful for that year we spent together every week. Some weeks we both didn’t feel up to it, but we did it anyway. I got to know her and what she was going through that year more intimately and I’m sure she’d say the same. There’s just something special about breaking bread together. This reminds me of that year.  What a cool project.

Just because you know I love Mr. Rogers.

Last week, I was doodling on a paper during an especially long work strategy meeting and I realized that I have no idea how to draw noses. Cue the magical internet teaching me how.

I fell in love with our 795 square foot home again this week and I’m motivated to decorate. Our dining nook and bedroom are on my list. Taking lots of inspo from my latest girl crush Alison Roman’s home on Domino. Reading that article led me to the small spaces tag on Domino and down the rabbit hole I went.

The Internet is Magic, Vol I

The internet is magic and I love it so much. This series is all about highlighting the writing on the internet that inspired me in a positive way so that we can remember that the internet can be a magical, wonderful place when it uses its power for good. Have something you want me to feature? Drop me an email.

I loved reading about Anita Vuong on We are Dore this morning. Vuong is a Death Doula, supporting people through the death process with grace, dignity and love. It’s a beautiful thing. I also love her work with ‘Guided by Flowers‘ where she repurposes flowers used for live events to brighten the lives of hospice patients. My favorite line:

“One man I gave flowers to couldn’t believe that they were for him. He opened up about how he really loved gardening, and though they weren’t tulips, he kept calling them tulips and said how much they reminded him of home. From then on, I make sure I always give flowers to men as well.”

This essay from Donald Hall via Cup of Jo this week was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. Yes, I love hyperbole, but it was beautiful. I read it from my work desk during in a lull in my workday and I had to take big gulps of my water to keep myself from crying.

“After twenty years of our remarkable marriage, living and writing together in double solitude, Jane died of leukemia at forty-seven, on April 22, 1995.

Now it is April 22, 2016, and Jane has been dead for more than two decades. Earlier this year, at eighty-seven, I grieved for her in a way I had never grieved before. I was sick and thought I was dying. Every day of her dying, I stayed by her side—a year and a half. It was miserable that Jane should die so young, and it was redemptive that I could be with her every hour of every day. Last January I grieved again, this time that she would not sit beside me as I died.”

And, to wrap up, a feel-good makeover for a very deserving couple going through a difficult time on Emily Henderson Design. This is a great example of using the privilege of a platform for good. I just want to sleep all day in the big ol’ bed.
