A Feminine Retreat…

In my partnership with my man, I have assumed all decorating duties and I basically have the run of house. He’ll sometimes try to be a voice of reason if I want to go down a path that won’t work for us, like when I was obsessed with buying a velvet tufted sofa. I mean, we have dogs and they shed and slobber. I’m glad he inserted his opinion in that scenario; otherwise, he’s typically enthusiastically supportive of my design choices. For a while I had a wall in my dining nook that I called the naked ladies because, well, it was full of paintings of naked ladies, including one really weird, cartoon-style one that I propped up on our little makeshift pantry bookshelf. You’d just be trying to get some pasta and would be eye level with some full-on lady breasts. It was awesome!!

Even though I can do what I want in our house within reason, I hold back from going too feminine in the overall aesthetic. I live with Keith, his son and two male dogs. Keith’s other son Ian also comes over all the time, so we are just full of testosterone in these parts. Even though I know that applying a gender construct to home decor is a bit ridiculous, I shy away from anything too lady-lair like. It also doesn’t really fit my personality, but stilllllll. I do love looking at home design that skews a little on the feminine side.

Enter Caroline Donofrio’s apartment, recently featured on Cup of Jo. It’s not what I’d choose for myself, but I do love it. I love how maximalist it is, how layered and moody, how eclectically feminine it is. Aside from the dead animals all over the place, this apartment is right up my design alter-ego ally.

What do you think? Could you live there?
